Maybelline New York Instant Age Rewind Perfector 4-In-1 In Fair/Light Review: The Truth About This Multi-Tasking Wonder

After analyzing dozens of real user reviews, I’m diving DEEP into Maybelline’s 4-in-1 Perfector in Fair/Light shade. Is this hybrid product worth the hype? Let’s break it down!

    First Impressions: Packaging & Design

The Maybelline Instant Age Rewind 4-in-1 comes in a twist-up bottle with an attached sponge applicator – something that’s generating MIXED reactions. While some find it convenient for on-the-go application, many users struggle with it:

“Every time I try to open it, my husband has to help me. Then he has to take it out into the garage and use his special tools!” complained one 63-year-old reviewer.

Several users mentioned difficulty getting product onto the sponge applicator. The twist mechanism requires significant force to work properly, with one user noting: “Takes a TON of clicks to get it started.”

The clear packaging also creates confusion: “I just wish they could use a different color wrapping instead of clear, because you can’t see where it starts and where it ends.”

    Formula & Texture

This product has an extremely lightweight, thin consistency – almost watery according to multiple reviewers. This makes it:

    • Very easy to blend
    • Non-cakey (great for mature skin!)
    • Comfortable to wear all day

As one 30-something user explains: “Now that I’m 30 I find full coverage foundation can look strange… This is a beautiful sheer option. It has a blurring effect but minimal coverage.”

The formula includes shimmer particles that create a radiant effect without looking “tin man metallic” or having “super obvious glitter.” However, some users were surprised by this shimmer element: “Did not know it was glittery.”

    Coverage & Finish

This is definitively a LIGHT coverage product. Users consistently describe it as:

    • Sheer
    • Natural-looking
    • Not buildable to medium/full coverage

One reviewer puts it perfectly: “It’s not for going out or going to an event but it is good for just something to throw on and go or pack in a bag if you are in a hurry.”

The finish is decidedly dewy and illuminating, creating what many call a “healthy glow.” However, this glow factor means:

    • It’s not ideal for oily skin types
    • Some find it too shiny/greasy
    • It doesn’t set completely dry without powder

“It stays wet and sticky for a while, which makes it easy to smudge or transfer. You need to use a powder or a setting spray to make it last longer and avoid creasing,” explains one detailed review.

    Shade Range & Undertone Issues

This is where the product faces its BIGGEST criticism. The Fair/Light shade appears significantly darker than expected, with strong yellow/orange undertones:

“I bought the lightest shade, which looks way darker in person than in the advertised photos.”

Well as seen with my hand in the pics I’m a fair skinned person. If this color is supposed to be for me and other fair skinned people really!.. They need to get a focus group together.”

Many pale-skinned reviewers expressed frustration: “I am a fan of Maybelline’s Eraser concealer, and believed this would be a larger, more luminous version of the concealer. While the product is light, easy to apply, and would make a nice bb cream, it is far too golden in colour.”

An important clarification came from one reviewer: “Maybe it’s being overlooked but there are two ‘fair-light’ shades. Fair-light 00 (neutral/yellow undertones) and Fair-light 0.5 COOL (peach/pink undertones). Make sure you know your skin’s undertone before making a decision.”

    Performance on Different Skin Types

    Mature Skin

Many reviewers 50+ LOVE this product! The lightweight formula doesn’t settle into fine lines or wrinkles:

“I am 63 years old and this product does wonders for wrinkles! Especially under the eyes!”

“Beautiful for mature skin, my friend is in her 50s and I’ve converted her.”

    Sensitive Skin

Mixed results here. Some report no issues: “I have very sensitive skin and this product didn’t break me out not once!!”

While others experienced reactions: “I would have put a better review, if I didn’t break out into an allergy rash not even a minute after I put it on.”

    Dry Skin

Generally positive feedback from dry-skinned users: “Perfect for everyday use or on the go… not drying and doesn’t stick to dry patches either.”

    Oily/Combination Skin

Less successful for those with oil concerns: “I felt that the oiliness made it come off sooner.” “It made me look so greasy.”

    Longevity & Wear Time

As expected with a lightweight, dewy product, wear time isn’t this product’s strong suit. Several reviewers mentioned:

    • It transfers easily
    • Requires setting with powder
    • Won’t last through a full workday without touch-ups

However, this seems acceptable to most users given the product’s intended purpose as a light, everyday option.

    Multi-Functionality Claims

Maybelline markets this as a 4-in-1 product (primer, concealer, highlighter, and BB cream). How does it perform in each role?

    As a Primer

Mixed reviews. Some use it successfully under foundation: “I like to top it with a light coverage foundation/skin tint so the glow shows through.

Others find it too emollient for layering: “I use this to help keep my makeup on longer. It did not do that and in fact I felt that the oiliness made it come off sooner.”

    As a Concealer

Most agree it FAILS in this category: “It does not cover any blemishes, redness, or dark circles.” “The product doesn’t provide any coverage.

    As a Highlighter

This is where it performs well according to many: “I don’t use this as a foundation on its own, more of a primer or a highlighter.” “I gave this review 2 stars because it does provide a tiny touch of shimmer.”

    As a BB Cream

This is its most successful function according to most reviews: “I have been loyally wearing it for a few years. I used to get so frustrated with foundation because it never failed to look cake-y on my face. But the 4-in-1 perfecter has the same effects as a light-coverage foundation but without the cake-iness and with an added glow.”

    Value & Product Quality Concerns

Several reviewers mentioned quality control issues:

    • Separation of the formula
    • Only water/clear liquid coming out initially
    • Product difficult to extract completely from packaging

“This particular one I purchased had water droplets inside the cap and when I first tried to put it on, water came out. I’m not sure if something separated or not but it seems to be OK now.”

“The formula is separated and you can’t shake/mix it up. Once getting the actual color out after turning the top and getting nothing but oil, it was pretty dark.”

    Who Should Buy This?

Based on the collective feedback, this product is IDEAL for:

    • Mature skin looking for a non-settling light coverage
    • Those who prefer a natural, “your skin but better” look
    • Makeup minimalists who want a single-step product
    • Anyone seeking a dewy, radiant finish
    • Medium skin tones (despite the “Fair/Light” labeling)

    Who Should Skip It?

    This product is WRONG for:

    • Very fair/pale skin tones
    • Those seeking medium-to-full coverage
    • Oily skin types
    • People who dislike any shimmer in their complexion products
    • Those who need long-wearing, transfer-resistant makeup

    Final Verdict

The Maybelline Instant Age Rewind 4-in-1 Perfector is a product with an identity crisis. While it excels as a glowy tinted moisturizer or BB cream, its packaging issues, limited shade range, and inability to deliver on all four claimed functions make it a hit-or-miss product.

For the right user – someone with light-to-medium skin seeking a subtle everyday glow – this could become a staple. But for many others, especially those with very fair skin or higher coverage needs, there are better options on the market.

    The biggest takeaways:

    1. GREAT formula for natural, dewy coverage
    2. POOR shade matching for truly fair skin
    3. FRUSTRATING packaging design
    4. EXCELLENT for mature skin texture
    5. NOT for full coverage needs

Would I recommend it? For the right person, absolutely! As one flight attendant reportedly told her neighbor: “This saves her so much time getting ready and she couldn’t stop thanking me.”

Just be aware of its limitations, particularly regarding shade range and coverage level, before making your purchase!
